Nvidia's proprietary format has won the distribution default for open weights; tooling built on MXFP4 bets on a standard with one-fortieth of its rival's downloads. In the author's Aug 29 Hugging Face count, NVFP4 drew 51.1M downloads over 30 days; MXFP4, the open standard co-signed by seven companies including Nvidia, drew 1.29M. Of NVFP4 downloads, 46.6% came from outside Nvidia's organization. Nvidia is reportedly buying Hugging Face for $12.9B (unsigned; both sides declined to comment), a bid for the channel, not the share.
Investors: mark down quantization and inference toolchains betting only on MXFP4, and value distribution on Hugging Face as a rented channel the platform can terminate at any time.
Founders: do not sell open-standard support as a feature; ship NVFP4 weights first and judge distribution only by third-party repo downloads.
Falsifier: if MXFP4's 30-day downloads overtake NVFP4's within 12 months of publication, this call is wrong, per the Hugging Face unauthenticated API.
Disclosure: written and verified with Claude-family tools; the conclusion cuts against Nvidia and favors the open-standard camp, so discount it; FutureX holds Hugging Face; the original footnote said it held no Hugging Face position, which was wrong and was corrected on Oct 2, so discount conclusions about Hugging Face in both directions. FutureX holds no position in Nvidia or the open-weight vendors named.
