Value consumer AI revenue as concentrated-customer revenue, not a subscription base: through April 2028, a broader paying base will not dilute the top 1%'s share of spend (an inference). a16z's Oct 5 edition, which for the first time ranks apps by U.S. consumer-card spend, shows the top 1% of payers accounted for 19.5% of observed spend, more than the bottom half combined; they average $903 a month across all AI products (August), up about 80% in 18 months, while the median payer's $25 has barely moved. Over the same period the share of U.S. businesses on Ramp paying for AI rose from 38.7% to 56.1%, and the top tier's average personal-card spend still grew.
Investors: in new deals, don't multiply subscribers by blended ARPU; get the top 1%'s revenue share, that cohort's 12-month retention and the share billed to company accounts; if missing, haircut head revenue as usage revenue with no subscription multiple.
Founders: shift staff from acquisition to invoicing and team billing, and design usage tiers for heavy users, not the $25 median. Falsifier (from Oct 11, 2026): if any later a16z edition shows the top 1%'s share of U.S. consumer-card AI spend at or below 16.6%, the call is wrong; it is verified only if the last edition published before Apr 30, 2028 shows paid-subscription penetration of at least 6.5% (4.5% in August 2026) and a top-1% share of at least 19.5%; otherwise pending, and a final pending reading is closed as unproven and counted as a miss. If there is no new edition by Dec 31, 2027, or an edition stops reporting either figure, YipitData's own comparable figures are used; with none by Apr 30, 2028, it is logged as 'adjudication source missing', never as verified.
Disclosure: written with Claude (Anthropic); a16z invests in OpenAI and xAI, Anthropic's direct competitors; FutureX portfolio companies ByteDance, Genspark, Pixocial (BeautyPlus) and Hugging Face appear in a16z's rankings, so discount both ways; FutureX holds no direct or indirect stake in Anthropic (confirmed by the author from FutureX's records).
